The Gespanntes Regal was one of the first pieces of furniture in our collection. Today it is still looking eagerly around our salesrooms and is enjoying cult status as a seasoned veteran of New German Design.
The shelf with the tightrope act
They say that over time relationships lose their sense of excitement. That doesn’t apply to our relationship with the Gespanntes Regal. And Wolfgang Laubersheimer, who developed the shelf in the early 80s, is still producing the Gespanntes Regal by hand. And even signs his name on one of the shelves. The characteristic steel cable in the design classic is by no means decoration, but provides tension and stability. After all, straight is child’s play.

Production
Wolfgang Laubersheimer, member of the Pentagon group designed the Gespanntes Regal in the 80s as a counter movement to the dictum of good form. The use of untreated steel with visible welding points was a completely new, virtually unknown approach at the time.

We are great fans of functionalism. That’s why we love the concept of the Gespanntes Regal, the characteristic of not just using the cable rope as an ornament. If the rope were not there, the stability and static of the whole piece would be destabilized. Also typical for Pentagon: The use of untreated steel with visible welding points. A completely new, virtually unknown approach at the time.

An old hand at the new German wave, this shelf has attained cult status. At an auction in New York it was even auctioned for far more than the purchase price. Even in these times of the omniscient internet. Who would have thought that it would still be looking around eagerly in our salesrooms?
