Diesel will become to a breath of fresh air

On the occasion of the Berlin Art Week 2019 and to mark the 30th anniversary of the FNP shelf, Nils Holger Moormann and Axel Kufus are linking the necessary elements and delivering the obvious solution: furniture by bike.

As the streets get more and more busy, the vehicles have to get smaller. And preferably CO2-neutral at the same time. On September 13 and 14 Nils Holger Moormann tested the inner-city delivery of pieces of furniture on the cargo bike. Without CO2, without traffic jams and without dust. Highly practical and with heart, soul and intelligence. And a promising future. Within two days the team, consisting of Moormann and cooperation partner OH Studio, transported 67 packages in total with a weight of 974 kg and covered roughly 70 km by bike in Berlin’s urban area in the process.

A special vehicle was required to transport bulky packages up to 3.40 metres long. This was contributed from Weber Technik and UM Products, in the form of a new prototype. In addition to a trailer, the cargo bike has a number of other innovative concepts such as 2 electric drives, 4 independent braking systems and tilting technology while remaining compact and flexible enough to be able to handle an incline of up to 15 % even when fully loaded with 250 kg. The POP-HUB, a temporary storage unit in Berlin’s Tiergarten district was set up as the logistics system for the deliveries over two days.

With this project, Moormann and OH Studio want to provide food for thought as an alternative to lorry based city logistics. „After two days test run I have to say that the delivery went surprisingly well“, summarised Nils Holger Moormann. „On the one hand we were on the road with an agile, CO2 neutral small vehicle. On the other hand another huge advantage is that there is no unsolvable parking problem even during the period when the furniture is being assembled.“ The reason for the initiative was the 30th anniversary of the classic shelf FNP, which links Moormann to Axel Kufus – Designer of the shelf system, Professor at the UDK Berlin and part of the OH Studio. „We want to look less into the past, but focus on the future to the elegant design of a last mile that is currently so worn out“ claim Axel Kufus and Arne Petersen / OH Studio.
